The 10 best video games to play in 2026

What makes a game one of the greats? It is more than a high review score or a record-breaking launch. The best games make their worlds feel alive, teach players a new way to think, or create stories people keep discussing long after the credits roll. This list balances critical reputation with design, influence, cultural reach and how well each game holds up today.

There is no single official scoreboard for the greatest games ever made, and this is an editorial ranking rather than a claim that every player should agree with the order. A landmark like The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time has a different kind of legacy from a social phenomenon like Minecraft or a narrative epic like Red Dead Redemption 2. Each earns a place for a different reason.

THE TIMELESS BENCHMARK

1. The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time

Few games shaped 3D adventure as decisively as Ocarina of Time. Its lock-on targeting, readable combat, distinctive dungeons and musical identity made a large 3D world feel understandable rather than overwhelming. Hyrule feels full of secrets, and every discovery gives the journey a satisfying sense of scale. Its age is visible, but exploration, puzzles and action still support one another. It also sits at the top of Metacritic’s all-time critic ranking. We place it first because its influence remains easy to recognise in modern action-adventures.

02

INFINITE POSSIBILITIES

2. Minecraft

Minecraft turns a simple loop—break blocks, collect materials, build—into a creative space with no single correct way to play. One player survives a tense first night; another builds a city, engineers a machine or explores with friends. Its lasting importance is freedom: rather than delivering one authored adventure, it gives players tools to invent their own. That flexibility has helped it cross ages, platforms and play styles. We rank it second because it is simultaneously a game, a creative toolbox, a social place and an invitation to experiment.

03

THE OPEN-WORLD GIANT

3. Grand Theft Auto V

Grand Theft Auto V makes Los Santos feel like a vast, playable satire. Traffic, radio, businesses, odd characters and changing neighbourhoods make wandering entertaining, while three protagonists give the story different perspectives. GTA Online extended the world into a long-running social platform of heists, vehicles, businesses and shared chaos. The structure can feel uneven, but few titles have had a comparable effect on mainstream gaming culture. For a site called GTA 2026, it is an essential inclusion—and a reminder that a strong setting can last far beyond launch.

A NEW KIND OF EXPLORATION

4. The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild

Breath of the Wild makes curiosity the main quest. Instead of pushing players from marker to marker, it turns a distant mountain, a strange ruin or changing weather into a reason to change direction. Physics-based interactions reward experimentation: fire, wind, metal and terrain can become tools. The world feels discovered rather than delivered, and every player's route produces a different set of stories. Some fans miss older Zelda's tightly structured dungeons, but its influence on exploration-led design is undeniable. It earns this position by making the journey itself the most compelling objective.

05

A WORLD WITH WEIGHT

5. Red Dead Redemption 2

Red Dead Redemption 2 is patient by design. Wildlife, weather, strangers and camp routines give its world a convincing rhythm; even a short ride can feel like a film scene. Arthur Morgan’s story explores loyalty, regret and the end of a way of life without rushing toward easy answers. Its deliberate pace and weighty controls will not suit everyone, but that slowness supports the themes. Few large-scale worlds feel so carefully observed, and fewer combine such detailed environmental storytelling with a central performance this emotionally resonant.

THE ROLE-PLAYING GOLD STANDARD

6. The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt

The Witcher 3 understands that fantasy stories do not need to end with a world-saving battle. Its best quests are intimate tragedies about people hiding truths, making compromises or trying to repair mistakes. Monster contracts add a satisfying structure, while investigation, folklore and preparation make each encounter distinct. The enormous map is filled with political tension and side stories that can rival the main plot. Its writing respects the player's intelligence, and choices are complicated rather than neatly moral. For fans of story-driven role-playing, it remains a defining experience.

07

DISCOVERY THROUGH DANGER

7. Elden Ring

Elden Ring moves FromSoftware’s demanding combat into a world that invites unscripted exploration. When a path becomes too difficult, players can investigate a cave, find equipment, summon help or return with a new build. That freedom turns a wall into a reason to explore rather than a dead end. The Lands Between is full of optional bosses, hidden dungeons and environmental clues that let players piece together its lore. Its mystery and difficulty are not for everyone, but earning a breakthrough feels exceptional. It is a modern benchmark for exploration, combat and world-building working together.

08

A LEAP FOR FIRST-PERSON GAMES

8. Half-Life 2

Half-Life 2 showed how a shooter could tell a story through the world around the player. Environments, character movement and staged encounters communicate events without constantly interrupting the action for cutscenes. The gravity gun turns ordinary objects into combat tools and puzzles, while the physics system makes the world feel responsive. Its pacing moves between tense fights, quiet observation, driving and inventive set pieces. Some innovations now feel commonplace because later games adopted them; that is part of its legacy. It helped reset expectations for how naturally story and interactivity could work together.

09

PURE DESIGN, PERFECTLY TIMED

9. Portal 2

Portal 2 builds a complete adventure around a simple rule: create linked portals and use momentum, timing and spatial reasoning to solve test chambers. The puzzles become more complex without losing clarity, making each solution feel earned. Its sharp comedy adds personality without replacing the mechanical satisfaction at the centre. The campaign introduces new surfaces, gels and light bridges through play rather than long tutorials; its co-op mode adds communication to the challenge. Portal 2 proves that spectacle and enormous maps are not requirements for greatness. A focused idea, expertly developed, can be enough.

10

THE GAME THAT NEVER GETS OLD

10. Tetris

Tetris is wonderfully direct: rotate falling shapes, complete lines and stay one move ahead of a tightening board. The rules are easy to understand, but mastery depends on speed, pattern recognition and keeping a plan under pressure. Decades of versions have changed its appearance and modes without replacing the core idea. Every session creates a new problem with instant feedback, which makes it endlessly replayable. It is difficult to compare a pure puzzle system with a narrative epic, but as interactive design, Tetris remains close to perfect—and a reminder that a great game does not need complexity to endure.

What the ranking tells us

These ten games use very different tools, but they share a respect for the player's time and curiosity. Some create worlds worth inhabiting; others perfect a single mechanic or use characters to give an adventure emotional weight. The most enduring games usually do more than look impressive at launch. They give people a reason to return, replay, experiment, or recommend them years later.

THE NEXT RELEASE WINDOW

Games to watch
from 2027 to 2029.

The future is exciting, but release dates are not promises. Below, exact dates are included only where the publisher has announced them. Projects listed without a date are genuine games to watch, not confirmed 2028 or 2029 releases.

2027Three major releases with announced dates

Final Fantasy VII Revelation

The third chapter of the Final Fantasy VII Remake project is one of the most significant role-playing games on the horizon. Square Enix has announced an April 8, 2027 launch on PlayStation 5, with an Xbox release planned for spring 2027. Following Remake and Rebirth, the game has the challenge of bringing a sprawling reinterpretation of a beloved story to a satisfying conclusion.

Fable

Playground Games is returning to Albion with a new take on the fantasy role-playing series. The studio has described a world where the people you meet react to your choices and form opinions about the hero, expanding the franchise's long-running interest in morality, reputation and consequences. Xbox has announced February 23, 2027 as the release date.

EXODUS

EXODUS is a story-driven science-fiction action RPG from Archetype Entertainment. It takes place far in humanity's future, where interstellar travel and time dilation turn the passage of time into a major story and world-building idea. The official site lists April 7, 2027 as its launch date and confirms versions for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and PC.

Also worth watching: Rockstar currently lists Grand Theft Auto VI for November 19, 2026 on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. Because that date falls before 2027, we have not counted it as a 2027 release or included it in the all-time ranking before players can judge the finished game. 2028The Witcher IV is the clearest major signal
04
PLANNED FOR 2028Single-player open-world RPG

The Witcher IV

CD Projekt Red has identified 2028 as the planned release window for The Witcher IV, making it one of the most concrete large-scale RPG projects on the 2028 horizon. The new saga puts Ciri at the centre of the story and starts a fresh chapter in the studio's dark fantasy universe. That change opens the door to different abilities, a distinct character arc and new corners of the Continent, while retaining the political tension and monster-hunting foundations that define the series.

2029A watchlist, not a confirmed launch calendar

As of October 11, 2026, we are not assigning major games to 2029 without a publicly announced release window. A title can be famous and still be years away; development announcements, cinematic trailers and brief production updates do not establish a launch year. The projects below deserve attention, but none should be treated as guaranteed 2029 releases on the strength of online guesses.

05

The Elder Scrolls VI

Bethesda's next mainline Elder Scrolls is a natural long-term watch for fans of open-world role-playing, exploration and player-led stories. The series has a huge legacy because its worlds invite players to choose their own pace and goals. But without a firm public release date, it is more responsible to treat this as a project to follow than as a 2029 booking. When Bethesda shares substantial gameplay or a release window, expectations can be judged against real evidence instead of wishful calendar math.

06

Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet

Naughty Dog has announced this new science-fiction adventure for PlayStation 5. Its premise follows bounty hunter Jordan A. Mun on a distant planet cut off from the rest of civilisation. The studio is known for character-led action games, so the most interesting questions concern how exploration and player agency work alongside its cinematic storytelling. No launch year has been confirmed in the announcement we reviewed, so a 2028 or 2029 date would be speculation. PlayStation announcement ↗

07

Kingdom Hearts IV and the next Mass Effect

Both projects could become major releases whenever their publishers are ready, but they should remain on a watchlist until dates are official. Kingdom Hearts IV has the challenge of moving a story known for its unusual blend of Disney worlds, action combat and elaborate mythology into its next chapter. The next Mass Effect has a different opportunity: bring players back to a science-fiction universe built on squad relationships, exploration and choices. Their eventual release windows matter more than fan-made guesses about which year will host them.

How to read a release calendar without getting burned

For 2027, we have several named games with announced dates and concrete information. For 2028, The Witcher IV is a notable planned release. For 2029, it is too early to claim a definitive list of blockbusters. Release plans change because games are complex productions: studios adjust scope, fix technical problems and move dates to protect quality or avoid crowded launch windows. Treat a date as the publisher's current plan, not a promise that no delay can happen.

A TRANSPARENT RANKING

How we made
the list.

The top 10 is an editorial selection, not a mathematical ranking of current sales, player counts or a single review aggregator. We considered critical reputation, influence on later games, quality of design, narrative or creative achievement, cultural reach and how easy it is to appreciate the game today. The order reflects our weighting of those factors, and reasonable players will rank these titles differently.

For current release information, we favour primary sources such as publisher announcements and official game pages. The dates and statuses in this feature were checked on October 11, 2026. A “planned” window may change, while “no date announced” means we could not verify a public date from the sources reviewed. It does not mean a game is far away or unlikely to launch soon.

Useful starting points include Metacritic's all-time critic rankings ↗, Xbox Wire's Fable update ↗, the official EXODUS site ↗, PlayStation's Final Fantasy VII Revelation announcement ↗, and CD Projekt Red's 2028 planning update ↗.
